KZN CIRCULAR NO. 58 OF 2020
RETURN OF LEARNERS TO SCHOOLS ON THE 6th JULY 2020
1. The Minister of the Department of Basic Education; Mrs Angie Motshekga hosted the
Council of Education Ministers (CEM) on Thursday, 2nd July 2020.
2. The reports presented by various provinces provided a broad review of all the
developments relating to the phased approach for the return of learners to school.
3. The meeting also received reports since the first reopening phase and assessed the level
or readiness of each Provincial Education Department to receive more learners as
envisaged from the 6th July 2020.
4. Having considered the reports, the Minister has directed that only Grade 6, Grade 11 and
Grade R will return to school on Monday, 6th July 2020.
5. However, the province has taken a decision to only accept Grade 6 and Grade 11 on the
6th July 2020. Grade R learners must temporarily remain at home and await further advice.
6. Since the decision affects all provinces, this circular aims to advise that all other grades
will be phased during the month of July in a differentiated approach within the stipulated
time frames as per the Gazette of 29th June 2020 published by the Minister.
7. Kindly bring the contents of this circular to all schools and officials of the department.

GRADE 7 : COVID – 19 : TIME – TABLE

Please be informed that learners from 7A and 7B will come to school on alternate days to ensure social distancing and curriculum coverage.

7B will report to school tomorrow and Thursday.

7A will report to school on Wednesday, Friday and Tuesday

NB: Learners will be given adequate work to be completed at home on the days they do not report to school.

Please make suitable transport arrangements for your child / ward.

NOTICE TO PARENTS / GUARDIANS

RE - OPENING OF SCHOOL : GRADE 7

Please be informed that Naidooville Primary School is ready to receive Grade 7 learners on Monday , 08 June 2020 as per COVID 19 protocols.

Please make sure that your child / ward has his / her own mask when they leave home.

School will provide washable facial masks for learners on Monday. Sanitisers will also be provided at specific points / times and at regulated intervals. Parents / Guardians can decide to send hand sanitisers with their child / ward.

Please encourage your child / ward to practice social distancing while using public transport and at school.

School gates will open at 7.00 and learners will be dismissed at 14.30.

Please make suitable transport arrangements for your child / ward

A safe environment can be achieved through elimination of infectious particles in the air and on surfaces by always adhering to the GOLDEN RULES

1. Prevent direct contact with persons who are sick - encourage educators, learners and staff to stay at home when feeling sick.

2. Use of personal protective equipment ( PPE ) - use protective face masks at all times

3. Environmental cleaning and disinfection - reduce the risk of micro - organisms in the environment by cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, hand rails, desks, tables, windows, etc. hourly or less frequently depending on the circumstances. An effective disinfectant is diluted bleach disinfectant ( 20 ml bleach per litre of clean water )

4. Social distancing - Keep a distance of at least 1.5 meters between persons where possible, avoiding gatherings and contact activities outside of the classroom such as extra mural activities, contact sport, assemblies, hall gatherings and queuing at tuck shops or for school feeding programme meals.

5. Hand Hygiene - Wash hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after using the toilet, touching food and if hands are visibly soiled / dirty.

6. Use alcohol - based hand sanitiser regularly, especially after contact with any person or after contact with frequently touched surfaces ie. phones, door handles, etc.

7. Avoid touching your eyes , mouth , or nose with unwashed / un - sanitised hands.

8. Limit airborne transmission - allow adequate cross ventilation in classrooms and office buildings. Limit visitors and the number of people that enter the school, office or classroom. Parents should enter the school only if absolutely necessary.

Practice cough and sneeze etiquette - cough in the fold of the bent elbow and sneeze in a tissue which should be discarded safely in a refuse bin with a lid. Wash hands immediately thereafter

BASIC EDUCATION MINISTER IN CONSULTATION PROCESS ON SECTOR RECOVERY PLANS AHEAD OF THE REOPENING OF SCHOOLS

The Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga has today held a series of scheduled meetings with stakeholders in the basic education sector. The purpose of the meetings were to consider the state of readiness for the reopening of schools.

The first meeting was that of the Council of Education Ministers (Ministers and MECs). This was followed by another meeting with the leadership of teacher unions. The last session was held with the School Governing Body Associations and the South African Principals Association.

These consultative sessions happened ahead of the Minister’s return to the National Coronavirus Command Council set to take place on Tuesday, May 12. Cabinet is also scheduled to sit on Wednesday where it is expected that the Recovery Plan of the Education Sector will also be discussed.

On Thursday, the Minister will brief the media on the preparations towards the reopening of schools. At the media briefing the Minister will provide details that include the final dates and detailed plans for the phased approach to the possible reopening of schools.

The Minister wishes to reassure South Africans that the safety of teachers and learner and all employees is paramount in all the decisions that are taken.
